What an amazing read! I loved loved loved Wonder Woman: Warbringer so freaking much, the incredible friendships, the girl power, awesome plot twist, kickass females, the diversity, it was all perfect! *screams* PERFECT I TELL YOU!
I can not fault this book, not a single thing at all. My heart literally aches because it’s over, will there be a second book? Who knows! My thinking is no, there probably won’t be a second book about Diana and all the amazing characters in Warbringer, as it’s part of the DC Icons series some of our favourite YA authors are recreating, I doubt we’ll see another book in the Wonder Woman line up and I am utterly devastated (IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING I DON’T. PLEASE SHARE!) So why did I love this book so much? Well, let me tell you… Leigh Bardugo is a freaking queen when it comes to writing, she creates characters you can relate to, characters you wish were real and that you want to be best friends with, characters you love to hate, bad guys that aren’t just bad guys because there’s so much more to them (the Darkling I’m looking at you!) and in true Leigh Bardugo fashion there is comedy, for instance there were moments when Diana was in the human world and experiencing things for the first time that had me cackling like crazy (these funny parts always seem to pop up while I’m on public transport, like why? Now everyone thinks I’m insane) and Theo, my did his humour remind me of Jesper from SoC! There’s also heart breaking moments, betrayal, and friendships you will be so jealous of! And oh boy, I adored the friendships in this book, they were truly amazing and something we don’t often see a lot of in YA, we don’t get to see enough awesome female friendships that are strong as hell and so packed full of girl power. I so badly want to be friends with Diana, Alia and Nim!
“Sister in battle,” murmured Diana, “I am shield and blade to you.”
“And always your friend.”
Having not watched the Wonder Woman film that most recently came out (or any other for that matter) and having not read any of the WW Comics, I really wasn’t sure if I would like this book when I first bought it. I went into it knowing pretty much nothing about Diana, where she was from, what she did, etc. I mean I knew who Wonder Woman was before I started reading but I knew nothing else about her, so don’t be put off from reading this book if you’re the same as me, this is definitely a book you can enjoy without being into comics or Wonder Woman beforehand. This was literally me and I loved EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND!
One of my favourite things about Wonder Woman: Warbringer (apart from the kickass friendships) is the diversity and representation, out of our handful of main characters only Diana is white, the rest of the main characters (Alia, Jason, Theo and Nim) are PoC and Nim is also bi. So many people have been screaming for more diversity in YA, and let’s face it guys, it’s definitely needed and Bardugo certainly delivered on that front.
“I am done being careful. I am done being quiet. Let them see me angry. Let them hear me wail at the top of my lungs.”
Wonder Woman: Warbringer starts with Diana and the Amazons on Themyscira, when Diana sees an explosion out at sea, she goes to investigate and ends up saving Alia’s life. Little does Diana know that the girl she just saved is the Warbringer, destined to bring about war and destruction in the world of man, now she must help Alia to save the world at any cost, possibly even at the cost of the life she just saved. It has plot twists that I swear if you see coming you’re some sort of magical creature because I just had no idea, it just reached out and smacked me upside the head like HEY! I’M A PLOT TWIST. NICE TO MEET YOU. NOW FEEL MY WRATH. And oh boy did I feel it, right to my god damn heart. The Characters are just perfect too, relatable, diverse, funny, flawed and man did I want to be friends with these guys. Get this book. Read it asap.
